The Testament by John Grisham

The Testament

“Troy Phelan is a self-made billionaire, one of the richest men in the United States. He is also eccentric, reclusive, confined to a wheelchair, and looking for a way to die. His heirs, to no one’s surprise – especially Troy’s – are circling like vultures.
Nate O’Riley is a high-octane Washington litigator who’s lived too hard, too fast, for to long. His second marriage is in shambles, he is emerging from his fourth stay in rehab armed with little more than his fragile sobriety, good intentions and resilient sense of humor. Returning to the real world is always difficult, but this time it’s going to be murder.
Rachel Lane is a young woman who chose to give her life to God, who walked away from the modern world with all its strivings and trappings and emcumbrances, and went to live and work with a primitive tribe of Indians in the deepest jungles of Brazil.
In a story that mixes legal suspense with a remarkable adventure, their lives are forever altered by the startling secret of The Testament.”

I have always been a big fan of John Grisham’s work and ‘the testament’ did not disappoint. This book has a couple of extra and unexpected surprises thrown in at the very core of the storyline that really make it a good book to read. I really enjoyed how Grisham paints vivid pictures, not only of the characters, but also of their environments.
It is a thrilling read, definately what I would call a commuter book – one you could happily spend 30mins to an hour reading a day and be satisfied.

Is that really you God? Hearing the Voice of God. by Loren Cunningham with Janice Rogers

Is That Really You God

An adventure in hearing and obeying the voice of God,Loren Cunningham’s dream began with a vision – waves of young people moving out across the continents announcing the Good News of Jesus Christ to the whole earth. Decades later, Loren’s vision has grown into an interdenominational movement of Chrisitans from around the world who are dedicated to presenting the Gospel to this generation. How did God move Loren’s dream from vision to reality? He led Loren and his wife, Darlene, through a series of tough lessons in guidance. The exciting story of Youth With A Mission has much to teach us about the art of listening to God as we seek to be used by Him. Is That Really You, God? is not only a practical guide to hearing God’s voice but also an amazing testimony to how following His direction can impact our lives and our world for the glory of God’s kingdom.

I first read this book in the early 90’s, and since then I have returned to it on numerous occasions. It is written as a story with teachings about hearing and obeying God’s voice ingrained in the story, as it has been on the author’s life. Loren and Darlene Cunningham have shown by example the cost and reward of following the voice of God in their lives as they founded missions organisation Youth With A Mission. The book has been a great light to me in times where my faith (or lack of) has been a big hinderance in moving forward!

No Compromise, The life Story of Keith Green by Melody Green and David Hazard

No Compromise

Singer/songwriter Keith Green challenged believers to break out of their status quo Christianity and embrace a put-it-all-on-the-line life of faith and action. Dynamic and charismatic, Keith was hailed as a prophet by many and a lighting rod of controversy by others. Never hesitating to speak his convictions, he often struggled to live up to his own strong declarations. In this inspiring biography, Keith’s wife, Melody, shares their years of spiritual searching, the events that led them to Jesus, and how their dedication to minister to others began. When Keith was 28, a tragic airplane crash took him and two of his young children home to the Lord. Left with a one-year-old daughter and another on on the way, Melody inherited Keith’s musical legacy of songs and his private journals. As she shares the highs and lows of their life together, you’ll be captivated by Keith’s courage, inspired by his commitment, and encouraged by the truths he shared.

No Compromise reflects the intensity with which Keith Green lived his life. This book really through up the challenge that in all you do to live 100%. Keith’s search for something more in life is really well portrayed in the first few chapters of the book and without his intense suborness he would not have had the influence on Christian music and worldview that he has done.
No Compromise is an inspiring read, and I felt constantly challenged to be aware of how I live up to my convictions or if I am willing to compromise my beliefs at a certain cost. I would definately encourage anyone who is tired of being wiery in their faith to read this one!!

“Startling Beauty”, My Jouney from Rape to Restoration by Heather Gemmen

Startling Beauty

“Startling Beauty is a stunning portrayal of spiritual and emotional restoration.
Raped in her own home, in fear for her children’s safety, and battling with a decision about the ‘morning-after-pill’, Hether Gemmen could have seen her life as one extended nightmare. But she didn’t.
Written with a rare blend of grit and subtlety, Heather’s gripping true-life story brings hope for anyone going through dark times.”

“I couldn’t put this book down, it was so good! I can’t even begin to imagine what Heather went through. The way she writes, it’s almost like you’re right there with her, going through it with her, feeling everything she’s feeling. It’s an amazing story of how God can take something so horrible and turn it into something so beautiful.”
